Everything you need to know about immigration is here…
and within your reach!
Immigrants to the United States now have at their disposal the
Guía Práctica de Inmigración. Practical,
affordable and very easy to understand, this book will answer your
most puzzling questions about immigration. The first printing is
in Spanish; an English edition will be available soon.
Reading the Practical Guide to Immigration (Guía Práctica
de Inmigración), you will know, before consulting with
your attorney, the answer to these and other difficult questions:
 |
How do I obtain a professional H1B visa? |
 |
With a student visa, can I ask for a professional H1B visa? |
 |
I have a tourist visa. Can I request a work permit (Labor
Certificate)? |
 |
My brother was killed by the guerrillas in Colombia. Can I
request asylum? |
 |
If they deny me asylum, can I ask for a student or professional
visa? |
This book contains everything you need to know about immigration
– how to obtain a temporary visa (professional H1B, student
F1, international transfer L1); asylum (step-by-step, from the initial
interview); permanent residency (residency by employment, family
or asylum); and United States citizenship.
This book does not replace authoritative advice from a qualified
immigration attorney, but offers you solid, objective information
that you need to know up front about your possibilities for obtaining
visas for work, asylum or residency. It is written in an easy-to-read,
easy-to-understand question and answer format.

I have come with a
tourist visa. Can I obtain a professional H1B visa? |
 |
You can obtain it, and in fact, that is a
smart way of using your tourist visa to contact businesses
that might be interested in your professional services. Remember
that the business must apply for the H1B visa for you –
not you directly. Have your professional title in hand and
an official translated copy (in English) of letters of reference,
books or articles published by you, and certificates showing
your participation in seminars and conferences about your
specialty. You must present sufficient documentation to demonstrate
your training and professional experience. |

Can I lose my permanent
residency? |
 |
Although it’s called “permanent
residency,” you can lose it in more than one way. You
can lose it by committing a felony. Serious crimes like drug
trafficking will land you straight in prison for a long time
and once you have completed your sentence – immediate
deportation.
Residency also can be lost for something as simple as not
residing in the United States. If you are absent for one year
or longer, you will lose your residency status. If you choose
to enter and leave the United States at regular intervals,
to “be here and not here” at the same time, the
United States can cancel your residency at any moment. There
are people who obtain their residency but really haven’t
decided to move here and live and work in this country. Sooner
or later, they will be discovered and will lose their residency.
